NOTE 5: NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Times Record, August 20, 1971 Mrs. Mattie Swain marks 84th birthday. BATH- The family of Mrs. Mattie Swain gathered on the porch at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Velma Crocker of 46 Dummer St., to help celebrate Mrs. Swains's 84th birthday Tuesday. Friends and relatives were served punch and cookies. Gifts included a dozen red roses from her daughter, a rose bowl from Westgate Flower Shoppe and a birthday cake. Mrs. Swain boasts of nearly 80 grandchildren. Great and great-great-grandchildren. She raised nine children, eight of whom are still living. Two live in West bath, one in Ellsworth, one in Woolwich, one in New York, and another daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Creamer in West Bath. "I worked two years at the Bath Iron Works during World War II, and 32 years at the Bath Laundry," Mrs. Swain said. "I retired when I was 65." She is a member of T.W. Hyde Auxiliary to the Sons of the Union Veterans and the Spanish War Auxiliary. For some 30 years she has made a hobby of attending game nights in the area.
