Rev. John Lathrop, Puritan Immigrant

Born in 1584, John Lothrop has been called “one of the four most prominent colonial ministers in America.” He received his BA from Queen's College, Cambridge in 1605; was ordained a deacon in 1607; received his MA in 1609; married Hannah House in 1610. Rev. John Lathrop ministered in England at the time of the publishing of the King James Bible. Puritans were calling the Church of England back to New Testament principles. The Archbishop, William Laud, sought to purge the growing ranks of Puritans within the Church of England. Lathrop initially carried out these instructions but eventually he renounced his ordination in 1623 and became a full-time Puritan minister. He moved to London in 1624 and to pastor the first Independent Church in London. In 1632 The Archbishop caused ministers of non-sanctioned churches arrested and the congregations to be dispersed. While imprisoned, Hannah Lathrop died leaving seven children ranging in age from 8 to 18 years. Lathrop was told that he would be pardoned if he would agree to permanently leave England. On 18 Sept. 1634, he sailed to New England on the Griffin about 1634 with members from his church.

He arrived in Boston and quickly moved on to Scituate in 1635 and became pastor of the First Church in Scituate where he remained till 1639. His opinions concerning letting non-Puritans attend services led to the church voting him out of the office. With a group of followers he moved and became founding father of the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. He continued his ministry there until shortly before his death on November 8, 1653. His house is now part of the town library.
