Albert H. Olsen, b. 5/21/1861 at Gudbrandsdalen,
Norway, son of Ora and Bretta Olsen. The family came in a
sailboat for U.S. in 1865. They had a large trunk of hard tack
for food, but both food and water were almost gone when they
reached the Canadian coast. They went to Coon Valley, WI where
Ora died. Bretta and her children went to the Sutton, NE area
where she raised her family and is buried near highway 6.
Lena A. Anderson, b. 11/1/1862 at Neenah, WI, daughter of Andrew
and Olina Anderson. Her older sister Rachel married Andrew H.
Anderson and lived south of Harrisburg, later moving to Kimball.
Brother Oliver lived east of Harrisburg. Lena worked at Cheyenne
Hotel Restaurant. Albert and Lena married at Rachel's home
12/27/1887. Albert filed on NE ¼sec 14-19-55. Lena filed on SW ¼
sec. 14-19-65. They returned to Clay Co. NE to prepare for the
move to their homesteads. Albert sawed out and numbered rafters,
sides, wall, etc. for a pre-cut 16x16' home.
In 1888 they loaded an immigrant railroad car with their few
household items, the ready-cut home, horses, wagon and two oxen.
The yoke for the oxen is in the museum at Harrisburg. Children:
Lilia, b. 11/16/1888, Sadie, b. 8/26/1894 at the homestead.
After Albert and Lena proved up on their homesteads they moved
the 1 6x1 6' home on wagons to school sec. 16-i 9-55. This
turned out to be a bad location as floodwaters came from the
south hills and washed everything down the draw. Jennings, b.
1/13/1899, lIer, b. 9/27/1901 at this location.
Lena and Albert bought the school land in 1917, bought sec. 9 in
1909 where the town site of Ashford was located. Dist. 32
schoolhouse was on the Olsen place, Lilia and Sadie taught
there. Albert was on the school board many years and also on the
board of regents when they decided where to put the high school.
Albert liked the Pumpkin Creek Valley and bought NW¼ sec.
8-19-55 from Mr. Logan. In 1904 they moved the house again to
this location. They bought a 2 story, 5-room house and attached
it to the 16x16 home. Albert got logs out of the wildcat hills
and built two bedrooms. This home still stands.
Omer A., b. 5/17/1904 in the same room as had all of the other
children. In 1931 Olsens built a new modern home near the old
home. Omer remained single and lived with his parents, he d.
1973. Lila m. Charles R. Barrett, 12/23/1917. They moved to her
parents home in 10/1938 to help care for them. Sadie m. William
E. Shaul, 8/24/1917. They had one son, Dale, b. 12/20/1929.
Jennings m.
Vinta
Arnold from Rub, NE, 8/22/1920. They lived in Gering and have
two daughters, Marvel and Greta.
Albert and Lena celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in
Dec. of 1937 and Lilia and Charley Barrett celebrated their 50th
anniversary in the same home 12/1966. Albert d. 6/1/1940 at his
home and Lena d. in the same home 3/8/1946.
NOTE 4:
GUDBRANDSDALEN: A valley than runs all the way
from the Dombås area south to Lillehammer, where the
Gudbrandsdal river ends in the Mjøsa lake.
