NOTE 5: He was the tenth and youngest child of Major Anthony Franklin and Polly (Mary) Nelson Franklin. He grew to manhood on his father's farm, attending school near Hillsboro, Ohio. In 1855 he moved with his wife to Charitan Mills, Missouri, where he eventually acquired a farm of
about 1,000 acres. John Nelson Franklin was an ardent Union man during the Civil War and held a captain's commission in the militia in
Putman County Missouri. His brother, Cyrus, fought as a cavalry officer in both the Mexican War and on the Confederate side during the
War Between the States. John N. is quoted in The History of Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio as saying, "Thank God that cruel war is over!"
