Notes: Joel Lewis FRANKLIN


NOTE 1: He was a merchant at Circleville, at one time cashier of a bank at that place. After he removed La Rue, Marion county, and engaged in the wholesale grocery trade. He afterward went to Lincoln, Nebraska, continuing the same business until his death, a year or two since. He
was a faithful and efficient member of the Methodist Episcopal church; always carried a certificate of membership with traveling, and
regarded a recommendation from a young man's Sunday-schoolteacher or superintendent, the best certificate of character. Joel Lewis had one
son, Nelson Gregg, who serve the Union army -- first as a private, and afterward as an officer rising finally (as did his grandfather) to the
rank of major.
