Notes: Aaron HIGGINBOTHAM


NOTE 1 Aaron Higginbotham Sr.(1720 - 10/03/1785) married Clara Graves. They lived in Amherst (formerly Albemarle) Co., VA. Aaron purchased 200 acres of land on 02/08/1759 being on both sides of Buffalo River near the Blue Mountains on which he then lived. See Albemarle Deed Book 2-91. They are probably buried on this tract of land. On 10/03/1763 he sold the 204 acres allotted to him by Moses in 1751 in the division of his father's estate. See Amherst Deed Book A-57. He purchased 390 acres on Thrasher's Creek from Neill Campbell on 10/03/1763. See Amherst Deed Book B-378. This land was conveyed to Aaron Jr. on 05/01/1777. The Higginbotham Cemetery is located on this land. Aaron was commissioned Captain of Militia on 08/07/1769.  See also Essex Co., VA Wedding Book 8-90.  The 1783 census of Amherst County listed Aaron's household as consisting of 2 whites and 15 blacks. He was a vestryman and church warden. His will mentions his sons, Samuel and Aaron, and four daughters, Frances, Mary Ann, Tamasin, and Margaret. His wife was Clara Graves, a direct descendant of Captain Thomas Graves of Jamestown, Virginia.
