Notes: Josiah CLEVELAND


NOTE 1: Josiah served in the Indian wars, 1688-9, probably in Maine.

 

NOTE 2: Settled at Chelmsford 1689, as did also his brother Samuel.

 

NOTE 3: His son Josiah Cleveland (1690) ... after attaining manhood, he became a man of wealth and of prominence in both town and church affairs. He was a member of the Separatists faith; had a son who was a deacon in the Congregational Church of Canterbury; another son

Reverend Ebenezer Cleveland commenced preaching at Sandy Bay in 1751; attended Yale, 1744-48; in the French and Indian War as Chaplain of a Massachusetts regiment; was also a Chaplain in the Revolutionary War. Because of his interest in the Separatist Church Ebenezer was expelled from Yale before graduating; but later reinstated and received diploma about 1765; a third son, Reverend John Cleveland , was one of the most prominent members of the family, was a distinguished divine, a public-spirited man, and a powerful writer and speaker. Attended Yale College, 1741 to 1745-- was expelled before he graduated because of sympathies for the Separatists movement of which his uncle, Elisha Paine, was leading; was in the French and Indian War, 1756-60; entered Continental Army 19 May 1775, was Chaplain at Cambridge during Boston siege.  -- adapted
